This is a portrait of Ken and his lovely dog Amber who he got as a puppy. I was walking around the area of Carral street with my camera. I was in a whimsical mood, one of those days when you can slow down, look at the world, have a chat, take some photos. Something about the companionship of Ken and Amber struck me, so I asked if I could take his photograph. He agreed rather graciously and I took about 6 or 7 photographs. After the photographs I sat next to Ken and asked a little about him and his life.

He disclosed that he was in fact an addict, heroin I believe, although now he is on methadone and lives quietly these days.

He gave me a brief run down on the activities of the corner we were sitting at, "Everything can be bought for $10 he explained, this street based economy, flap of heroin $10. roch of crack cocaine $10.00, pack of black market cigarettes $10.00 and even a sexual act such as a BJ, $10.00.

I was amazed at how much was going on, but I could not see it, until it was explained to me. I thanked him and moved on with my walk.

INSIDE OUT A GLOBAL ART PROJECT

The other day I decided to participate in the art project "INSIDE OUT"
I had to take a self portrait, which I had not done for a while, upload it and see if was selected by the committee.

I was informed today that I am No 25661 in this project. I will now receive a large poster of my self portrait which I then can paste it somewhere for the world to see.

The Plan

Create a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone will be challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images will be made into posters and sent back to the project’s co-creators for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or in a group; posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window to a wall of portraits on an abandoned building or a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable virtually.

About the Winner

JR’s career as a photographer began when he found a camera in the Paris subway. In his first major project, in 2001 and 2002, JR toured and photographed street art around Europe, tracking the people who communicate their messages to the world on walls. His first large-format postings began appearing on walls in Paris and Rome in 2003. His first book, Carnet de rue par JR, about street artists, appeared in 2005.

About the TED Prize

The TED Prize is designed to leverage the TED community’s exceptional array of talent and resources. ART SHOW IMPRINT AT THE WALDORF

Last night I saw the works by Japanese artists Mai Yamashita and Naoto Kobayashi. It was curated by Vancouver artist, based in Berlin a Mr Victor Wang, who composed this installation at the Waldorf. It is presented in collaboration with Dida Zende and The Goethe-Institut.

I was commissioned by Impact Magazine to take a portrait of Doreen Hill for the business profile section of the magazine. I made a quick studio, lights, white seamless background in Doreen's office, and we did the shoot before her next client arrived. She was great to work with and we had lots of photos to choose from.

ITS FAMILY PORTRAIT TIME

Its amazing how quickly time flies by, days, weeks, months. Often when we have a family we chronicle time by the growth of our children, their changes, one year she is only wearing dresses, next year only jeans will do. It is important to document these moments with a family portrait. Tiny babies very quickly become toddlers, and before you know it teenagers.

Portraits are a marker of time, and it is something that your children will treasure when they are adults, and that’s why it is important for mothers and fathers to be in the photos too.

So take a moment and remember the last time you all had your portrait taken together. It is a bit of effort to organize, but it is well worth the effort.

Vancouver is always full of surprises, as one of my subjects for the Vancouver Portrait Project said " In Vancouver you just need a bus ticket to see so many cultures, no plane ticket needed."

While on location for a shoot yesterday I came across celebrations hosted by the Buddhist temple at Jackson and Powell. The celebration is called "O Bon", which is a traditional Japanese summer festival where ancestors are honoured and remembered. This festival has lots of Japanese dancing (Odori).

I have been longing to add to my doll series for the last while. Today I decided to simplify the process and photograph on digital rather than film on my 4x5 view camera. These dolls are not meant to be scary or invoke images of demented dolls from horror films. My thinking is that at one time these dolls were loved and cherished and yet they often end up looking a bit the worse for wear and lying around in buckets of discarded toys. I approach these portraits as I would a person, trying to find some truth.

I was commissioned by LOV Magazine to photograph dentist & artist Sean Peter Sikorski. I spent a wonderful sunny afternoon in his apartment/studio, photographing, talking about life and art. He practices his dentistry in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver for the Portland Hotel Society and is also a very committed talented artist.

His paintings and sculpture which include references to the Downtown Eastside, dentistry and religion.

Beauty Pageants are a way of life in Colombia, they are followed with great interest and fervour from young girls to old men.
Journalist Roberta Staley and I were able to experience the very exciting Miss Popular or "Reinado Popular de Cartagena beauty pageant.

This pageant has a representative from each of the barrios or districts of the Caribbean coastal city of Cartagena in Colombia. The winnner was Geraldine Alvarez Marin from the barrio of Chapacua.

I travelled to Haiti a year ago with fellow journalist Roberta Staley. It was a difficult trip, but a profound and inspiring experience, as we were both deeply touched by the graciousness and beauty of the Haitian people. During this time, we covered the collapse of a primary school, and saw many dead and injured children pulled from the rubble. It was an experience so terrible to witness that we could only hope that it would never happen again. Yet it has -- but on an unfathomable scale. The suffering of the Haitian people is also unfathomable. But there is something we can do. Please donate money to support this appeal to provide food, water and shelter to the survivors who are suffering the loss of family and the pain of traumatic injury.

I worked on this photograph a few years ago, when I was experimenting with mixed media and photographic prints, some of my images were put into the microwave to see what would happen. This image has feathers, gilt, paint, lipstick and crayon.

Lace Embrace Wedding Gown

An ivory peau de soie wedding gown was designed by Melanie Talkington of Lace Embrace Atelier for the wedding of Amanda and Marc.

The wedding gown was a curvaceous Edwardian corset trimmed with black Chantilly lace and a black lace chemisette that looked like cob webs . The couture skirt was slim to the floor fanning out below into cobweb godets which flowed into a trailing train. The veil of black Chantilly lace gave an impression of black roses and leaves over her eyes.
